Year round Sunflower

This is the story of the year round sunflower.

I bought 100, antique bottles, from a woman, whose grandfather made suntan lotion in Florida, and sold it in the early 1900s.  The bottles were and still are in perfect condition with covers!  I was going to put bath salts in and sell.  Didn’t work! Bummer.  The neck was too narrow. The bath salts would get stuck inside the bottle and you couldn’t get them out.

Then I get this brainstorm of making a big glass flower for the garden, with the spokes of a bike tire….. but what to use for the petals?   I have lots of different pieces of glass, but I really think they should be the same shape…. then I remember the box of bottles.

First, I painted the glass different shades of orange, red and yellow.  Then I put holes in the bottle covers and attached to the spokes of the tire.

I love this sculpture.  When the sun hits it, it glows.  It brightens up the space that it is in.

Everyone who sees this sculpture tries to spin it.  Unfortunately it doesn’t move.

If I was more mechanically minded, I might have been able to make it spin.  But that could be an idea for another sculpture…..I still have a few pieces of glass around.

This sculpture is available for sale.  $75 plus shipping.  mrssarahsmith@juno.com
