Beaver Meadows- Plein air

Unexpected free time, to go with the Holland Tuesday Painters to Beaver Meadows !!!!   So with Oil paints in hand, I zoomed over the hills to be only an hour late.   Everyone else was set up and like busy beavers painting— get it— beaver meadows…. busy as beavers? Most were doing water scenes, but Kathy was set up by this sunlit path with wild foxgloves growing.  I choose the sunlit path.  But then after getting set up I realized that Kathy is this amazing pastelist, and she was more than 1/2 way done with her picture.  Did you know that art can turn into a competitive sport?  And I am no where near as good as Kathy… so there was some tension going on in my mind, okay maybe a lot, a really lot .  This picture had to turn out good!  Needless to say, it did not, and here is what I did to after I got home…

Then I started again in my studio alone,  with no pressure. One of the beauties of oil paint is that you can layer it, and have the undercolor make the top color richer.  So I did this is stages, letting one layer dry before putting another on top.

This turned out pretty much as I remember the sunlit path between the deep shade trees.
